Walking Holidays in the Western Palatinate

Though nothing like as well known outside Germany as the Black Forest, or the Rhine and Mosel Valleys, if you ask German walkers where you should go for your next walking trip, they are likely to recommend the Western Palatinate.
Stretching north from the French border and bounded to the east by the vineyards and small towns of the area round the German Wine Road, the forests of the Western Palatinate form one of the most unspoiled and compelling part of western Germany. Sparsely populated and densely wooded, dotted with castles (mostly now ruined, destroyed by the armies of the French Louis XIV during his attempts to incorporate the area into France), and pretty villages, most of the area is a Nature Park.
This whole area is available to walkers via a network more than a dozen different walking tours of varying lengths. We reckon that the most exciting of these is The Wasgau Trail. For some information on the other walking tours in this area, see Other walking Holidays in Germany.

The Wasgau Trail
Five and six day walking tours in the South-western Palatinate
This exciting tour, which crosses the border into Alsace, is probably our most strenuous walk. Most days involve about 1500 feet of ascent.

It takes you through one of the finest walking areas in Europe, where the countryside is characterised by dense, ancient forests where old red sandstone outcrops (also very popular with rock climbers) have been weathered into the most amazing shapes. There is also a multitude of romantic ruined castles along the route.
