The Wasgau Trail 2008

This tour is not described in our brochure
Map of the Wasgau Trail Two versions of this walk are available: the standard package is for 7 nights and 6 days walking. On this package you cross the French border into Alsace on day 4. If you have less time and are happy with a somewhat more demanding walk, you can cover it in only 5 days by avoiding the stop in Alsace, follow a shorter route direct to Ludwigswinkel on day 4.

Both these packages include accommodation on the final night after the walk. You can, if you prefer, leave immediately after the end of the walk without staying the last night.
Day 1. Arrive in Hinterweidenthal.

Day 2. Through woodland, latterly with fine views, to Hauenstein with its superb churches. The afternoon takes you past several magnificent rock outcrops, easily climbed and affording outstanding views, before you reach the small town of Dahn (about 14 miles).

Day 3. Start by climbing up to the Hochstein and on to three ruined castles sharing the same rock ridge. Continue to Drachenfels Castle, carved out of the living rock in the 12th. century. Finally to a fifth castle, the restored Bewartstein and on to Rumbach (about 13 miles).

Day 4. Through a nature reserve and up to Wegelnburg, the highest castle in this part of Germany and almost on the French border. Cross into Alsace, pass three more castles and over a river to the Col de Hirtenbach and drop down to Niedersteinbach (about 11 miles).

If you do the walk in only 5 days, the distance from Rumbach to Ludwigswinkel is about 14 miles.

Day 5. Climb up to the Maimont, an iron-age fort with ramparts and altar stone, then drop down to the border again and continue to Ludwigswinkel (about 8 miles).

Day 6. This is the longest day's walk; into the Schöontal valley, through dense forests back to the borderand over the Staffelskopf with views over northern Alsace. Finally past an amazing sandstone outcrop down into Eppenbrunn (about 16 miles.

Day 7. The final day takes along a nature trail and past a further ruined castle. Just before reaching Hinterweidenthal you come to the Devil's Table, a remarkable series of rocky outcrops (about 14 miles).
