Hermann's Way - Along the main ridge of The Teutoburg Forest
This walk is named after the German hero Herrmann, known in English and Latin as Arminius, the leader of the German tribes who in 9AD completely annihilated three Roman legions under Varus. The walk follows the main ridge of the Teutoburg Forest, the southeastern end of which is thought to be the site of the Roman defeat. The Teutoburg Forest is sometimes only a few miles wide, a densely wooded ridge sticking up out of the north German plain. The full route runs from Rheine, near the Dutch border, to Velmerstot, some ten miles beyond Detmold, the home of the German Youth Hostel Association. The route is heavily forested. The most popular stretch is from Tecklenburg to Detmold, which is a five day, 6 nights walking tour with intermediate overnights at Bad Iburg, Burgholzhausen, Bielefeld and Oerlinghausen. Daily distances are between 11 and 15 miles. However, you can just take a short break of two or three nights, or extend your walk for up to seven nights. You can also do the walk in either direction, though the route description is only available in the direction described above. |

The Odenwald and Heidelberg
The Odenwald is the magnificent countryside that stretches south of Frankfurt to Heidelberg (one of Germany's most beautiful and romantic cities) and the River Neckar. Walking in this superb countryside is characterised by the contrast between hill and valley; the paths sometimes lead you uphill for quite long periods. The towns and villages are typically half timbered, often with a ruined castle at the highest point. Our holidays usually start and finish in the attractive town of Beerfelden, rebuilt in 1810 in the neoclassical style. We offer holidays lasting from as little as two days (ideal for relaxing after a business trip to Frankfurt) to seven days. The area is blessed with an excellent network of paths, allowing the creation of an individual walking tour for all. This means that you can book a similar package on separate visits to the area and still enjoy a new walking experience each time. |

Walking in the Western Palatinate
Most of the area both to the north and to the south of Kaiserslautern and to the east of Saarbrücken lies within the Pfälzerwald Nature Park. We reckon that the most exciting of these walks is the Wasgau Trail, one of the walks listed under Nearby Germany. However, for those looking for a longer or a shorter walk in this part of Germany, or those who have already walked the Wasgau Trail, there are ten further walking tours, of varying lengths available to those who want to explore this area. The country is characterised by ruined castles, rock outcrops and dense forests. The routes are The Castles Way (6 or 7 nights), On the Trail of the Missionary Pirminius (7 nights), The Emperor Frederick Barbarossa Trail (5 nights), The Trail of the Counts Palatine (7 nights), The Saar and Palatinate Way (6 or 7 nights), The Trail of the Wandering Minstrels (4 or 7 nights), The Glan and Lauter Valleys Way (4 nights), The Celtic Wine Trail (7 nights), The Donnersberg Way (4 nights), The Grand Tour of the Western Palatinate (16 nights), The Grand Tour of the Western Palatinate - Northern Loop (11 nights), The Grand Tour of the Western Palatinate - Southern Loop (10 nights). |

The Weser Hills Way
This walk roughly follows the line of the River Weser, immortalised throughout the world by the legend of the Pied Piper. Both the Weser and this walking tour start in the town of Hann. Münden, noted for over 700 half timbered buildings. Along the way are many castles, often associated with stories from Grimm's Fairy tales. However, this is not a riverside walking tour. While a number of the overnight points are on the river, much of the walking is through the hill country to the east and west of the river. This is the mysterious forested countryside that gave rise to such well-known tales as Hansel and Gretel. Along the route are not only the Sleeping Beauty's castle, a unique Hugenot settlement, and many dramatic castles, churches and monasteries, but also the home to both Baron Münchhausen and the home of the Pied Piper, Hamelin. Tours of eight or five days are available, as well as a short break of three days, an ideal add-on to a family visit or a business trip. |
