The Volcanic Eifel Tour 2010

This tour is not described in our brochure
Map of Volcanic Eifel Tour The Volcanic Eifel region is noted particularly for its crater lakes, locally known as Maar. These are lakes that have filled the craters of long extinct volcanoes. Elsewhere you will find mineral springs and fine woodland, while many of the towns are known for their castles, mostly now ruined, but still forming a dramatic backdrop to 21st century streets.

Day 1. Arrive at Gerolstein.

Day 2. Leave Gerolstein walking via the Kasselburg wild life park, where you can feed the wolves and watch eagles fly. Continue along a valley and climb the Ernstberg (2300ft). Finally you descend to Daun (about 13 miles).

Day 3. From Daun walk first to the Gemündener Maar crater lake, then to the Mäuseberg, from where the is a fine view.Continue to the Weinfelder Maar crater lake (also known as the Totenmaar, or Lake of the Dead) where you can visit the Chapel of Peace. The route continues past a third crater lake, the Schalkenmehrener Maar, then a site known for its fossils. Finally through forest to Manderscheid, where there are three castles (about 12 miles).
Pulvermaar
Day 4. The day starts with a walk up to a fine viewpoint, then walk east to two more crater lakes, the Holzmaar and the Pulvermaar, the latter is also known as the "Eye of Nature". Then through forest and open country to Ulmen where there are the remains of a crusader castle and another crater lake (about 16 miles).

Day 5. Leave Ulmen for the Jungfernweiher lake and nature reserve, known for its waterfowl. Continue through forest to the Galgenberg, a forested hill whose name means "Gallows Hill". Then you pass another nature reserve, the Mosbrucher Weiher, which in spite of its name is more in the way of being a marsh rather than a tarn. If you want, you can climb the highest summit in the area, the Hochkelberg (2230ft), before descending to Kelberg (about 16 miles).
Covered Bridge
Day 6. Walk through forest, then across open country to the Ahrbach valley. Continue via the monastery at Niederehe and Kerpen castle into Hillesheim, which still has town walls and an old centre (about 14 miles).

Day 7. Follow a fascinating Geological Nature Trail through mostly open countryside into Birgel, where there is a historic watermill that grinds mustard (about  14  miles).

Day 8. Through forest, along a romantic stream and past a lake to a stone age cave, ending at Gerolstein (about  13 miles).
