Upper Bavaria and in the Allgäu |
|
|
|
|
Upper Bavaria is one of the most beautiful areas in Europe.
As you head south from Munich there are lakes in the north,
followed by the rolling grasslands which are the home of the
wonderful Bavarian dairy products. These include the Pfaffenwinkel,
an area noted for its baroque churches and monasteries. Finally
you come to the dramatic Alps in the south. The area around Füssen at the southern end of the King Ludwig Way and the Lech Heights Trail is one of four prime walking areas covered in the BBC TV series German Wanderlust featuring Julia Bradbury. We offer the following holidays:- |

The King Ludwig WayA five or seven day walking tour - or take even more time if you wantOne of the best known walking routes in Germany, this is mainly easy going, along farm roads and tracks, through magnificent natural woodland and two impressive gorges, over gentle hills and through attractive villages, with many striking examples of Baroque and Rococo architecture. Many walkers take five days over the walk, though it is possible to either do it more quickly, or to have a really relaxing walk, taking seven or more days to really appreciate the sights along the way.Tours are available from April to October. We offer three versions of this holiday: Option 1 - Tour Code KLW/6 This tour takes 5 days / 6 nights and requires about 15 miles walking per day. Option 2 - Tour Code KLW/8 This tour takes 7 days / 8 nights and requires about 11 miles walking per day. Option 3 - Tour Code KLW/RHH Fully tailor-made tours. You tell us how long you want to spend walking the King Ludwig Way and whether or not you want your baggage transferred and we shall design a tour just for you. Overnight points can be different from those suggested on the route description and extra nights can be taken at any point. Baggage transfer, where required, may charged separately. |

The Priest's WayA Six Day Walking TourThis west-east route is particularly rich in Baroque Church architecture. It is particularly recommended for those preferring a quiet walk. Starting from Marktoberdorf you walk over the Auerberg to the River Lech at Lechbruck, where you cross the Lech Heights Trail. Then walk on to Steingarden where you join the route of the King Ludwig Way heading north past the Wies Church to Rottenbuch. From here continue via the pilgrimage church at Polling to the local capital, Weilheim, then through a nature reserve to the Starnberg Lake. The final stages take you past Benediktbeuern monastery, where the manuscripts that Carl Orf used for the Carmina Burana were discovered, to Lake Kochel. |

Lech Heights TrailA Five Day Walking TourAnother gentle and less frequented walk, there is little climbing as you are following a river valley. The small towns of Landsberg am Lech and Schongau are particularly attractive places to explore along the route. The walk starts in the medieval town of Landsberg and follows the line of the River Lech south. Enroute you pass fine viewpoints and Roman remains en route to the beautiful hill top town of Schongau. From here the route continues to Füssen, crossing in its latter stages the same country as the King Ludwig Way. Indeed, as an alternative, the final day's walk can be along the King Ludwig Way or along the lake shore. |

At the Foot of the Alps - FüssenA six day single centre holidayFüssen has something for everyone. The River Lech cascades down from the heights through this small town at the foot of the Alps. There is a castle, an abbey and a fine museum; the Royal Castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are nearby. Oberammergau and King Ludwig's hunting lodge at Linderhof are also within reach. There are fine sports facilities too, swimming, skating, and a range of watersports, while hang-gliding from the Tegelberg is also very popular. This is as well as walking and cycling on both the King Ludwig Way and the Lech Heights Trail; and walking in the Ammergau alps. There is a huge range of paths and trails, on the Tegelberg, on the shores of the Forgensee, and in the alpine foothils. |

GarmischA six day single centre holidayGarmisch (or more precisely Garmisch-Partenkirchen, to use its full name) is perhaps the best known town in the German Alps. In part, this is because of it is set below the highest mountain in Germany, the Zugspitze. Also, it has hosted the Winter Olympic Games. The important thing, though, is the town's magnificent situation between the high alps of the the Wetterstein Mountains and the more gentle Werdenfelser Hills. Apart from the hills and mountains walkers should also visit the Partnach Gorge.A vast range of walks is available here, some easy, some middling and some difficult - and there is real mountaineering too. But one of the attractions is that there are easy walks high up on some of the mountains, allowing all to have a taste of walking among the alpine meadows and hills. |
