Travel to your Holiday in Germany

Walkers are naturally concerned for their environment and are increasingly worried about the impact of air travel on global warming and use of scarce resources. With the time taken up by airport security, the time saving compared with rail travel is small. Most of Germany is easily reached within a day by train from London and the Southeast, provided that you make an early start.
Inter City Express
If you need to travel to London, it makes much more sense to take an afternoon train to Paris or Strasbourg, Brussels, Aachen or Cologne and spend the night there: much more interesting and cheaper than a night in a London hotel. The only extra cost is the price of your hotel.
French TGV
Of course, you have total flexibility as to how you travel to your holiday, but for a relaxing journey from the very start, you need surface travel. From an Inter City train or a modern ferry you enjoy the scenery and slowly immerse yourself in another culture.
Stena Ferry
We offer a full range of surface travel options, allowing you to choose what suits you.

Please contact us if you want to buy a holiday without travel.
Please note that our financial protection scheme is not allowed to cover air travel and therefore we are unable to supply air travel as part of our holidays.

All non-air travel supplied by us as part of your holiday is, of course, fully protected.

Rail Only via Brussels or Paris
Eurostar Train
The easiest way to travel is by Eurostar through the Channel Tunnel. There are trains throughout the day to both Brussels and Paris and both are worth an overnight (or longer) stay.
In most cases you continue your journey from Brussels via Aachen and Cologne, two fine cathedral cities also well worth a visit, though for the Mosel Valley and the Hunsrück the route is via Luxembourg instead.
From Paris your route is via Strasbourg, another fine cathedral city with a unique Franco-German culture.

In general, you travel via Paris to the Black Forest and Swabian Alb, as this route is both quicker and cheaper, while the Brussels route is more suitable for other parts of Germany.
Thalys Train at Cologne
However, you can always choose to travel by a different route from that suggested. You can even travel out via Paris and back via Brussels, though this does cost a little more.

All prices are based on second class travel throughout. You can upgrade to first class if you want. Please see our brochure or phone us on 01946 861652 for more information.
Rail & Sea
DFDS Ferry
Sail from Newcastle to Amsterdam, Hull to Rotterdam or Zeebrugge, or from Harwich to Hoek van Holland with onward rail travel. The crossings from Hull and Newcastle are overnight only, that from Harwich operates by day and by night.

Rail & Sea travel can be a very attractive option when travelling from northern England or from Scotland, especially if you are travelling to Saxony, the Harz or Thuringia.
A particularly pleasant option is to travel to Saxony by ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam, followed by a full day in the Dutch capital. In the evening you catch the overnight sleeper from Amsterdam directly to Saxony.
By Car
Unfortunately, we are no longer able to offer guaranteed inclusive prices for self-drive customers.
If you want to drive to your holiday, the cost is the "No Travel Included" price plus the cost of your chosen ferry crossing, plus (where necessary) the cost of your return journey from the end of the walk to where you left your car.
We are happy to book for you on any of the following ferry routes:
Dover to Calais
Harwich to Hoek van Holland
Hull to Zeebrugge or Rotterdam
Newcastle to Amsterdam.

We can book you into a wide range of comfortable, family run hotels when travelling by car, if you need to break up your journey.
Extras

Sleeping Berth on Ferries

Accommodation must be booked when travelling overnight. Cabins with private facilities are offered on all ferry routes.
Cabin Berths

Meals on Ferries

You can now pre-pay your meals on board at a useful saving compared with shipboard prices.
Air & Rail
ICE at Frankfurt Airport
If you want to fly, there are services from most UK airports. In the price table for each holiday there is the price including rail travel from the most convenient airport.

Flights often leave very early or very late in the day, and it may not always be possible to travel between the holiday area and the airport on the same day as your flight. Cologne, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Berlin Schönefeld, Hamburg, Dresden, Hannover, Leipzig-Halle, Friedrichshafen and Munich airports have rail stations.
The underground connection to the main rail station at Nuremburg and bus transfers at other airports are not included.

Please note that under current legislation there is no financial protection covering air tickets bought directly from an airline, including purchases from the airline's own website. This means that if the airline with which you are booked ceases to operate, you stand to lose your money.

You may be able to buy Scheduled Airline Failure Insurance separately, or it may, sometimes, be included with your travel insurance policy.
Add-ons to Private or Business Journeys
Equally, if you going to Germany anyway, perhaps for a wedding or on business and want to spend a few days walking before returning to the UK, we will supply the rail tickets needed to get you to where you plan to take your walking break.
