Walking Holidays on the Swabian Alb

The Swabian Alb (Schwäbische Alb in German), also sometimes referred to as the Swabian Jura in English, is the limestone massif immediately to the east of the Black Forest. In the north, it is well separated from the Black Forest by the River Neckar, while to the south it is cut through by the dramatic Danube Gorge.
Hillside
This is a very different area from the nearby Black Forest; just as in the Yorkshire Dales here in the UK there are a number of fine dripstone caves to be seen. This is still quite a harsh landscape characterised by craggy outcrops and poor soils with few towns of any size. Geological faulting has resulted in a number of isolated mountains, many still crowned with castles. It is perhaps no surprise that two of the great noble families of Germany, the Hohenstauffen and the Hohenzollern have their routes in this country. The area is also rich in flora, with anemones, daphnes and exotic thistles being particularly prominent.

Unsurprisingly, this is one of the primary walking areas in Germany; it deserves to be much better known outwith Germany. The regional Rambling Club has long boasted the largest membership of any in the country. We are delighted to offer walking tours through this unique landscape. The following holidays are currently available:

The Hohenzollern Way
This six night tour covers the south eastern Swabian Alb and the eastern Danube Gorge between Sigmaringen and Beuron.
Starting in the historic town of Hechingen, below the dramatic bulk of Hohenzollern Castle, you walk up to the castle, then continue over the hills to the valley of the River Vehla. The route follows the line of the valley to the Danube at Sigmaringen, where there is another fine Hohenzollern Palace. The rest of the route takes you through the Upper Danube Nature Park to Beuron, where there is a fine monastery.

The Swabian Panorama Way
This five night tour starts at the pretty half timbered spa town of Bad Urach. Following the northern scarp of the Swabian Alb, mainly along the original long distance path of the Swabian Alb Rambling Club, the way takes you past the finest waterfall in the Swabian Alb, then the dramatic Lichtenstein Castle and the superb viewpoint of the Three Princes Rock, marking the point where the former Principalities of Hohenzollern, Württemberg and Fürstenberg met to end at the half timbered town of Jungingen.
