Walking Holidays on the Swabian Alb |
|
The Swabian Alb (Schwäbische Alb in German), also sometimes referred
to as the Swabian Jura in English, is the limestone massif immediately
to the east of the Black Forest. In the north, it is well separated
from the Black Forest by the River Neckar, while to the south it is cut
through by the dramatic Danube Gorge. |

|
This is a very different area from the nearby Black Forest; just as
in the Yorkshire Dales here in the UK there are a number of fine
dripstone caves to be seen. This is still quite a harsh landscape
characterised by craggy outcrops and poor soils with few towns of
any size. Geological faulting has resulted in a number of isolated mountains,
many still crowned with castles. It is perhaps no surprise that two of
the great noble families of Germany, the Hohenstauffen and the
Hohenzollern have their routes in this country. The area is also rich
in flora, with anemones, daphnes and exotic thistles being particularly
prominent. Unsurprisingly, this is one of the primary walking areas in Germany; it deserves to be much better known outwith Germany. The regional Rambling Club has long boasted the largest membership of any in the country. We are delighted to offer walking tours through this unique landscape.
