Saxon Switzerland

Saxon Switzerland (and Bohemian Switzerland across the border in the Czech Republic) is a superb countryside of fine river landscapes and fantastic weathered rock outcrops, a countryside both for the walker and the rock climber as well the holidaymaker in search of new cultural experiences.

Through all this runs the broad River Elbe with its water meadows and rich wildlife. There are castles and fortresses to visit as well as fine old towns.

Saxon Switzerland is one of four prime walking areas covered in the BBC TV series German Wanderlust featuring Julia Bradbury.

Our holidays are based in the area around Bad Schandau and Krippen, on the banks of the river and close to the Czech Republic and are ideally placed to explore this fascinating country.
Note: Hotels in Saxon Switzerland do not normally have twin rooms.

We strongly recommend that you spend time in Dresden, Prague or Berlin before or after your holiday. Please phone 01946 861652 to discuss it.

Saxon and Bohemian Switzerland

A seven night circular walking tour

Much of this route follows the Malerweg or Painters Trail. Saxon Switzerland was much favoured by the artists of the German Romantic school.

Starting conveniently in the small spa town of Bad Schandau, just north of the German/Czech border, this tour includes the dramatic Bastei rock outcrop high above the river, Königstein Fortress, and many of the characteristic flat topped sandstone outcrops, typical of the region.

This is a fairly demanding walk with some steep climbs, while descents can be along steep and narrow paths or steps. Up to 2000 feet of ascent.

A Walk through Saxon Switzerland

A 6 night circular walking tour

This walking tour will introduce you to much of the finest countryside in this fascinating corner of Germany. The contrast between lush riverscapes and dramatic cliffs and rock outcrops makes for a superb holiday. By comparison with the previous walking tour, Saxon and Bohemian Switzerland, this tour is significantly more easy.
Bookings for high summer should be made well in advance.

Krippen & Bad Schandau

These communities are ideally situated for walking holidays. With a nearby Inter City rail station offering excellent connections to Prague, Dresden and Berlin the area is very accessible, while the excellent local public transport network of paddle steamers and a light tramway as well as buses and local trains makes the construction of walking routes a joy.
