A Walk Around the Feldberg 2012The Classic Walking Tour in the Southern Black Forest | |
![]() |
This 9 day walk is the perfect introduction to walking in the southern Black Forest.
Quite demanding at times, but taking in the highest summit and many of the finest
views, as well as lakes and tarns, you experience the varying landscape in the
best possible way.
|
This is a circular tour, so those walking the full circuit can, of course,
start and end where they choose. However, unless you arrive by car, you need to
arrive in Titisee or Hinterzarten. The description assumes that you arrive
in Titisee.
Shorter walks of 4, 6 and 9 days, starting in Hinterzarten, are also available. This holiday includes free use of local public transport throughout your stay. |

|
Day 1. Arrive in Titisee, on the shore of the lake of the same name.
Day 2. Follow the Black Forest Western Long Distance Path across mainly
open countryside north from Titisee to Heligenbrunnen and Fürsatzhöhe,
where there are fine views of the valleys on either side. Continue through forest, then
across a high plateau (about 3670 feet) before you reach the Hohenwart. Now walk
down to the Picketfelsen rock, which is another fine viewpoint, and then to the top
of the Ravenna Gorge. (It is well worth diverting from the path to explore the gorge
with its dramatic waterfalls.) The walk ends in Hinterzarten
(about 13 miles, 1900 feet ascent).
Day 3. Leave Hinterzarten on the Emil-Thoma-Weg, the most popular path up
the Feldberg, the highest point in the whole of the Black Forest. The path climbs
gently through forest, but with many viewpoints up to the Feldsee, a dramatic tarn
high on the shoulder of the Feldberg. Continue over the Seebuck, an outlying top
to Feldberger Hof (about 9 miles, 2500 feet ascent).

Day 4. First climb to the summit of the Feldberg, from where you can see the alps.
Bow follow the Westweg to the Stübenwasen viewpoint to a nature reserve, noted both for
its nordic and alpine flora, and for the chamois that live here. Descend gently to an inn
and then to Notschrei (about 8 miles, 1650 feet ascent).
You can extend the walk to the Schauinsland viewpoint if you have time. This is an additional 6 miles. Day 5. From Notschrei head west to the Langenbach Valley nature reserve, where
capercaillie roam. Continue past the summit of the Hörnle to Wiedener Eck, where you
will stay the night. While you can stop now, most will continue through the forest, at times
steeply uphill past the Heidstein and the Krinne to the Belchen, which, though a little
lower than the Feldberg, is recognised as having the finest views in the whole Black
Forest. Return to Wiedener Eck via the Hägstutzfelsen rock outcrop and the Lückle
(about 13 miles, 2450 feet ascent).

Day 6. Start the day by walking across meadowland. Soon you enter the forest and
walk gently up and downhill across rivers, passing two fine viewpoints. At Knöpflebrunnen
there are both a mountain inn and another fine viewpoint at a rock outcrop. In Aftersteg
there is a museum of glassmaking; then you continue to the Todtnau Waterfall,
one of the most dramatic in the country. Now the route leads high above the main
village of Todtnau to end in the hamlet of Fahl (about 15 miles, 2100 feet ascent).
Day 7. Although fairly short, this day includes the most climbing.
The day starts with a steep climb up past the Silberberg. Through the forest, the way
climbs to the Bernau Cross. Drop back down to a waterfall, then climb up again to the
Hof-Eck Pass. Now you follow the Westweg south to the summit of Blössling (4308 feet),
from where there is a wonderful view down into the Bernau Valley. Continue along the Westweg to the
Hochkopf (4154 feet), before descending to Todtmoos-Strick
(about 14 miles, 3125 feet ascent).

|
Day 8. Walk first into the centre of Todtmoos, where there is a wonderful baroque
pilgrimage church. Leave the town through the romantic Hohwehra gorge. Next you climb the
pass at the Ibacher Cross. Cross a nature reserve, then follow the Panorama Way across
open country. Back in the forest, follow the Old Monk's Road down to St. Blasien
where you should visit the cathedral. The final stage takes you alongside a lake to
finish in the highest village in the Black Forest, Höchenschwand
(about 14½ miles, 2800 feet ascent).
Day 9. Today's walk is almost entirely through magnificent forests. First you
descend nearly 1000 feet to the Schwarzabruck lake; then climb the opposite side
of the valley to the village of Rothaus, famous throughout the Black Forest and
beyond for its state-owned brewery, next door to your hotel.
(about 9 miles, 1425 feet ascent).

|
Day 10. Start with a gentle climb through open country, with fine views towards the
Feldberg. After a spell in deep forest you come out again into open country and can see
the Schluchsee lake to the southwest. Return to the forest and walk down into Lenzkirch.
After exploring the little town, climb steadily for an hour to the top
of the Hochfirst (3914 feet) before descending to the town and lake of Titisee
(about 13½ miles, 2100 feet ascent).
