The Neckar Valley, the Odenwald & Heidelberg

The River Neckar is one of the most romantic in Europe. Rising just north of the Danube, it cuts between the Black Forest to the west and the Swabian Alb to the east.

Two of the major cities of Germany, Stuttgart and Heidelberg lie on the river and the middle reach of the river is a significant winegrowing area.

Further down the valley the river cuts through the hills of the Odenwald. The dramatic crags are frequently crowned by castles, many now ruined, but some still inhabited.
Hirschhorn Village
With landscapes varying among vineyards, forest, riverscape and meadows, this deserves to be much better known than it is. The advantage of its relative lack of recogition is the peace and quiet you will experience walking here. The following holidays are currently available:

The Neckar Valley Way

A seven night walking tour

This tour covers the lower Neckar Valley from the Imperial town of Bad Wimpfen to the famous city of Heidelberg.
Bad Wimpfen is home to the best preserved medieval imperial palace in Germany, while Heidelberg, world famous for its university and student culture, was previously the capital of the Electors Palatine.
The route runs mainly parallel to the river, but not directly along its course. Most of the walking is to the right (east and north) of the river along the foothills of the Odenwald hills, with a regular steady ascent and descent. Nevertheless, this is a fairly easy walk, with daily distances usually less than 12 miles.
