The HunsrückThe Hunsrück is the forested range of hills south of the Mosel and west of the Rhine. It is noted for its Roman remains, with the area being crossed by old Roman roads. You will find yourself passing the remains of Roman settlements, temples and villas. Elsewhere there are romantic glens leading up from the Mosel, virgin woodland, old watermills, ruined castles and fine views. The famous TV drama serial "Heimat", made by Edgar Reitz who is himself from Morbach in the Hunsrück paints an accurate picture of this rural community. Once a source of precious gemstones, life here is still largely centred in the unspoiled villages. The area also includes the highest peak west of the Rhine. |

The Mosel ValleyThe Mosel (or Moselle) Valley, twisting and turning as it cuts between the Eifel to the north and the Hunsrück to the south has a very different atmosphere to that of the Rhine. The deep open curves covered with striking wine slopes rise to superb wooded and rocky landscapes.Vines have grown on the Mosel since Roman times. Today many of Germany's finest wines are made here. Highly picturesque small towns such a Bernkastel are also a characteristic of the Mosel Valley. Paths take you through and above the vineyards with fabulous views across the valley. The terrain and most of the gradients are fairly gentle, making the Mosel Valley a perfect place for a relaxing holiday. |

The EifelThe Eifel, north of the Mosel and west of the Rhine is remarkably different from the Hunsrück to the south. Our holidays focus on the Volcanic Eifel, to the south. This is a countryside of crater lakes, basalt crests, tufa deposits and hot springs resulting from the area's volcanic origin. Many summits are crowned with a romantic castle ruin. Your walks will also take you past dolomite cliffs, over rolling hills and through peaceful woodland, past en route Stone Age, Celtic and Roman settlements, traditional farmhouses, ancient trees and nature reserves. |

The Rhine ValleyThe Rhine is world famous for its history and legends. In medieval times the province of robber barons, their former fortresses are today the romantic ruins that give the river today much of its character. The river is the setting for the Niebelungenlied, the national epic poem that was itself the inspiration for Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle. The whole opera cycle opens on the banks of the Rhein. Today the whole of the upper middle Rhine from Koblenz in the north to Bingen and Rüdesheim in the south is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. While the area is undoubtedly popular with large numbers of visitors, you will find that they are concentrated in just a few of the attarctive towns lining the banks. For the walker, after less than 15 minutes walking from the busiest of Rhine towns, you will find yourself surrounded by exquisite and peaceful countryside. This is without any doubt a unique landscape that deserves to be explored on foot. The Rhine is also a winegrowing landscape and you will find nature trails taking you through the vineyards as well as long distance paths past the castles and through the forests. |
