The Lech Heights Trail 2010

This tour is not described in our brochure
Map of Lech Heights Trail The route follows the valley of the River Lech and so involves little climbing. You spend five days walking from Landsberg am Lech to Füssen.

While the stretch from Schongau to Lechbruck is quite long, a transfer can be arranged to cut out nearly four miles from this stage.

On the final day, you can undertake the last 5 miles or so by boat on the lake if you prefer.

Day 1. Arrive in Landsberg.

Day 2. Start with a walk through the most interesting parts of medieval Landsberg, then start the Lech Heights Trail itself, walking though a game reserve, past "Devil's Kitchen", a viewpoint over the river, to Pitzling, where there is a fine small palace. Continue past Celtic ramparts to Mundraching and the Hohenwart Inn. You will either spend the night here, or be transferred back to the hotel in Landsberg (about 13 miles).

Day 3. If necessary, transfer from Landsberg to Hohenwart, from where you first walk to the "Balcony of Upper Bavaria" (a magnificent viewpoint), then on to Epfach, once the Roman settlement of Abodiacum, where there is an interesting museum. Next to Kinsau, following the river valley past Celtic-Roman remains, across water meadows and through woodland to the fine old town of Schongau (about 12 miles).

Day 4. To shorten the day's walk by almost four miles, you can be transferred from Schongau to Burggen. The full route follows the river to the Litzauer Schleife, a dramatic bend in the river to Burggen.
From here the River Lech is dammed, giving the impression that you are walking alongside a series of lakes. The countryside here includes meadowland, forests and marshland. The day ends at Lechbruck (about 17½ miles from Schongau, 13¾ miles from Burggen).

Day 5. First walk to Prem, where you join the King Ludwig Way from Steingaden, then through watermeadows. Follow the Halblech brook to end in Berghof or Buching (about 14 miles).

Day 6. From Buching walk to Greith. From here on there are fine views of the alps. The Lech Heights Trail leads along the shore of the Forgensee Lake to Füssen.
If you prefer, you can divert to the King Ludwig Way via the Pöllat Gorge to Neuschwanstein, or you can walk into town along the lake shore. In high summer you can take a boat on the lake into Füssen (about 13 miles).
