The Upper Lusatian Hill Trail 2008

This tour is not described in our brochure
Map of Upper Lusatia
This is a six day / seven night walk through the unique countryside of Upper Lusatia. In the villages along the way you will see the characteristic Umgebinde houses typical of the area and perhaps the locals costumes, while in the inns you will hear the local Sorbish language.
Day 1. Arrive in the small town of Neukirch, noted for its craft pottery.

Day 2.From Neukirch, follow a nature trail to the top of the highest (1930 feet) hill in the Upper Lusatian Hills. Pass a number of characteristic Lusatian houses and end at Sohland on the River Spree (about 16 miles).

Day 3. Walk gently downhill to a lake, then uphill to Ellersdorf. Continue with fine views over the surrounding country and pass an open air swimming pool. Climb over Bieleboh (1641 feet) which offers more fine views and end at Beiersdorf (about 9 miles).

Day 4. Follow the River Spree, then through forest via the Kuhberg and Ebersbach to the source of the river and the summit of Kottmar (1917 feet). Finish in Eibau, noted throughout Saxony for its black beer (about 15 miles).
View from the Trail Summer in Upper Lusatia High Level Forest
Day 5. First stop today is the windmill village of Oberoderwitz. Continue south over Grosser Stein (1549 feet) which is noted for its panoramic view. Continue to Grossschönau. The day ends on the Czech border at Waltersdorf (about 15 miles).

Day 6. Today's route through the Zittau hills passes striking rock outcrops en route to the spa town of Jonsdorf, also served by a famous narrow guage railway. The route continues past more dramatic rock formations and then climbs over the highest point on the route, the 2463 feet high Hochwald, situated on the Czech border. Then head into the spa town of Oybin, or follow the border to Lückendorf, depending on the availability of accommodation (about 9 miles).

Day 7. From Lückendorf, which lies at 1740 feet, start by climbing over the Scharfenstein with fine views over the valley. Now the route passes a number of rock faces popular with climbers to enter the spa town of Oybin.

If you have overnighted in Oybin, you can make a circular walk south by retracing the last part of yesterday's walk to Lückendorf, then walking back to Oybin as described above. (If you do this, you can then take the steam train from here to Zittau if you want!)

Otherwise, from Oybin the route is steadily downhill and passes a mill en route to Eichgraben. Continue to the border, then head north first along the Czech, then the Polish border into Zittau (about 10 miles).
