The King Ludwig Way 2012

The most popular German Walking Trail among UK walkers
Map of King Ludwig Way
The area around Füssen at the southern end of the King Ludwig Way is one of four prime walking areas covered in the BBC TV series German Wanderlust featuring Julia Bradbury.
The pattern of five days walking with breaks in Diessen, Peiting, Wildsteig and Buching is still the most popular way to enjoy this walk. Tour KLW/6 covers this option.

Increasingly, though, walkers want to be able to spend more time over the walk, in order to enjoy all the sights along the way to the full. Tour KLW/8 takes seven days over the walk, with breaks in Andechs, Wessobrunn, Peiting, Wildsteig (2 nights, allowing a walk to Steingaden or a rest day) and Buching.

On either tour it is well worth taking an extra night in Füssen at the end of the walk to allow you plenty of time to explore the Royal Castles and surrounding area.
If neither of these options meets your needs, we can tailor your own King Ludwig Way holiday to your requirements. This can be either with or without baggage transfer, and within reason, walking as far per day as you want.
Starting officially at Berg on Lake Starnberg the route follows the lakeshore, then climbs through forest and past a lake and across meadows to Andechs Abbey, where there is a fine brewery. Then you continue down a thickly wooded gorge to the Ammersee, which you cross by ship to Diessen. From here the way crosses a nature reserve and passes through dense forests to the monastery at Wessobrunn.

The way continues to the foot of the Hoher Peissenberg (3261 ft), the highest point north of the alps. You can either climb this for its fine view, or skirt around, as you choose, before continuing to Hohenpeissenberg and Peiting.
KLW Waymark
From Peiting you walk through dense forest, then the stunning gorge of the Ammerschlucht to Rottenbuch, Wildsteig and across meadows offering fine views of the Alps to the Wies Church. From here you either cross a nature reserve, pass a Celtic settlement, and through meadows with magnificent views of the Alps to Trauchgau or Buching, or walk to Steingaden (Minster) and then follow River Lech to reach Trauchgau.

The final stage of the walk goes past a lake, then up the huge chasm of the Pöllatschlucht to Neuschwanstein Castle. Finally through woodland along the Austrian border, high above the Schwansee lake to Füssen.

*Please Note: Accomodation in Wessobrunn*
Accommodation in Wessobrunn is limited. There is a small inn in the village, with a few rooms to current standards with private facilities, but it is not always open. Otherwise the only other accommodation available is the monastery guesthouse, which does not have en-suite facilities and the bathroom facilities are not of 21st century standards.

Nevertheless those of our customers have have stayed in the monastery have told us that this stay was a very special experience. The friendliness of the nuns and the unique atmosphere are well worth the visit.

When booking, please tell us which accommodation you would prefer. Please note, though, that we cannot guarantee to be able to book your first preference.

At times it can be impossible to book accommodation in Wessobrunn, in which case the next option is the village of Paterzell, where there is a very comfortable inn. However, this is a couple of extra miles to walk, though normally we can arrange a transfer from Wessobrunn monastery. There is normally an additional charge of £15 per person in a double room.
Neuschwanstein Castle
For both tours, baggage transfer limited to two pieces per person.

Dates: Available at any time from mid April to the end of October, excluding the Ascension Day long weekend, 17-19 May.
For Tour KLW/8 it may be possible to make alternative arrangements, starting in Landsberg instead. Please contact us if you want to start this holiday at this time, in order to discuss the possibilities.
