The Celtic Way and the Steigerwald 2010

This tour is not described in our brochure
Map of the Celtic Way and the Steigerwald Situated between the great cities of Nuremberg and Würzburg, the Steigerwald serves the people of both as a place to relax in the fresh open air. Unlike most upland areas, much of the western scarp is perfect for growing vines, so this walk offers a range of landscape experiences; you can experience forests, hills and vineyards while exploring one of the most sparsely populated areas in Germany.
Day 1. Arrive in the romantic town of Bad Windsheim.

Day 2. Walk northwest through forest to the ruins of Hohenlandsberg Castle. Then to the vineyards around Frankenberg Castle. Through the vineyards to Ippesheim (14 miles).
Franconian Wine Steigerwald
Day 3. Through more vineyards to Bullenheim, and up to the fine viewpoint on the Bullenheimer Berg. Then through forest and past a lake to Markt Einersheim (15 miles).

Day 4. Through vineyards to the ruins of Speckfeld Castle and into forest. Along wooded heights to Schwanberg Castle, a fine viewpoint high above the famous vineyards of Iphofen. Then to Castell (the home of Faber-Castell pencils) where there is both a baroque palace and a castle mound, to end the day in Abtswind (13 miles).

Day 5. A heavily forested walk to the monastery village of Ebrach (11 miles).
Steigerwald Vineyard Steigerwald Forest
Day 6. First through a beautiful valley, then to the ruins of Stollberg Castle and the Stollberg wine slopes to Michelau. North to another ruined castle, from where there is a fine view and on to Eschenau (13 miles).

Day 7. Finish on a gentle note by walking over two small hills and then on to the banks of the River Main at Sand am Main (8 miles).
While this is the "official" end of the walk, you normally continue for a further couple of miles to Zeil am Main, where there is a rail station for your return journey, whether to an airport, the start of the walk in order to collect your car, or for the rail jorney home.

While not part of this tour, we suggest that you take the opportunity of visiting Bamberg while in the area. Please ask for details.
