The Hohenzollern Way 2012

A Classic Limestone Country Walk
This tour is not described in our brochure
We are unable to be specific about the amount of uphill walking on this walking tour, but it is between about 980 feet and 1300 feet per day.
Day 1. Arrive in the historic town of Hechingen.
Day 2. Start by climbing up to Hohenzollern Castle, which you should visit. Then walk to a pilgrimage church. Continue to the fine viewpoint of the Zellerhorn. From here you follow the ridge past a number of dramatic rock outcrops and viewpoints to end in the village of Killer (about 12 miles).
Day 3. Climb up the Killerberg, then on to the ruins of Hohenringingen Castle. Through forests to another ruined castle, Ringelstein. Walk up to a high level meadow on to the top of Titusköpfle, from where there is a magnificent view. From here you pass a rock outcrop, another castle ruin and a cave. Shortly before the end of the walk there is the Eulenloch, a cave inhabited in prehistoric times. End at Gammertingen (about 15 miles).
Rock Outcrop
Day 4. Today's walk follow the valley of the River Lauchert. On the way you pass the Devil's Gate rock, vist the village of Hettingen, pass the Gallus spring and then enter Veringenstadt. There is plenty to see here; castle ruins, the home of the Strub family (famous artists from the area) and Neanderthal caves. Continue to Veringendorf, where you can see the oldest Romanesque church in the region. Climb up to the ruins of Hertenstein Castle, from where there is another fine view. Finally via another dramatic rock outcrop to the Danube at Sigmaringen (about 18 miles).
Day 5. Start by visiting Sigmaringen Palace, one of the most important Hohenzollern houses. From here, the two final days follow the Danube upstream. After a fine view of tha Amalienfelsen rocks above the river, climb up to a monastery. Cross the Devil's Bridge, the walk down to the Danube past a number of small caves. Climb up the other side to the ruins of Gebrochen Gutenstein, from where the views are breathtaking. Passing three more rock outcrops on the way, you finish at Thiergarten (about 11 miles).
Day 6. Walk up through forest to the former river bed of the Danube. This is limestone country and the river's course has changed markedly. Continue to the ruins of Falkenstein Castle. Walk down to the Schaufelsen, the highest of the rock outcrops above the Danube, offering magnificent views. Continue past a number of other viewpoints high above the river, then follow the path through the dramatic Im Fall gorge along one of the side valleys. From here continue to Hausen and Beuron, dominated by its magnificent monastery, where the monks make, among other things, a magnificent Black Pudding (about 11 miles).
