The Harz Mountains

The highest mountains in northern Germany, the Harz Mountains offer the holiday maker not only countryside ranging from high summits and ancient forests to limestone valleys and caves, but also include some of the most interesting and beautiful small towns in Europe.

The whole centre of Goslar is a UNESCO Heritage Site and Wernigerode, a beautiful old town full of brightly painted buildings deserves to be one too. The Brocken is not only the highest peak for many miles around, it is also a mountain with extraordinary emotional resonance for all Germans. Visited by many German writers including Goethe and Heinrich Heine, in more recent times the summit, rising directly above the former iron curtain, was of great importance to both the Soviet and East German authorities as a centre for spying upon the west, as well as on each other.

The Harz also has spas, including Bad Harzburg in the west and Alexisbad, popular with Hans Christian Andersen, in the east. There are also many fine lakes.

The Harz Witches Trail - a 6 day walking tour
This tour is not described in our brochure

This walk (Harzer-Hexen-Stieg in German) which opened in late 2003 is a long distance path running from west to east across the Harz Mountains. At less than 60 miles and with very little uphill walking in the later stages it is a fairly undemanding route and in the years since its creation has become extremely popular with walkers from all over Europe.

Each stretch of the route has been designed with a particular theme in mind, so that the walker comes away with a variety of experiences and a full picture of the different cultures and histories that combine in this area of Europe.
