The Black Forest

The Black Forest is not, as its English name might suggest, a single forest; rather it is the name given to a hilly region some 100 miles from north to south and some 45 miles from east to west. About 60% of the land is covered in woodland, so there is much open country too. Much of the land lies at over 3000 feet, while the tops of the hills rise to around 4500 feet.
Black Forest Moorland
The open country of Northern Black Forest is mainly heath and moorland, while to the west, overlooking the Rhine Valley there are excellent vineyards.
The Southern Black Forest, by contrast, is a landscape of hill farms dotted among the sometimes dense forests. Here is where you find the highest hills and, arguably, the more dramatic scenery.
Black Forest Farm
For the UK based walker, the Black Forest will be the best known of all the prime walking areas in Germany. The Black Forest Society created the first Long Distance Footpaths in the first decade of the 20th century, and 65 years before the Pennine Way opened in England. Equally, the Black Forest is the original home to the concept of the walking tour where your luggage is transferred for you.
Much more recently the Black Forest has led the way with "KONUS", a local initiative that grants all visitors free use of local public transport. All walkers on one of our holidays have completely free use of buses and local trains from their arrival until the end of the day they leave.
Black Forest Train
The forested hills are cut by deep valleys which provide a dramatic contrast to the long ranging views from summits. Everywhere there is superb walking.
Note: Hotels in the Black Forest do not normally have twin rooms
