Walking Holidays in Eisenach 2009

This tour is not described in our brochure
Map of Thuringia and the Rennsteig

Eisenach grew up around the castle of the Wartburg, the castle that to the Germans themselves most treasure. The historical associations of this amazing castle, particularly Luther's translation of the bible and the story of Tannhäser, are very rich. Eisenach is also the birthplace of JS Bach, and a mecca for music lovers.

On account of the number of ancient monuments, a holiday in Eisenach is unique in the way it combines historical sites with wonderful walking. The town itself is quite small, but there are always plenty of things to do here.
View of the Wartburg
The Berghotel
The Berghotel, carefully restored in 1998, is high above the southeastern edge of town: although less than a mile from the centre of town, footpaths pass the door. Relax on the terrace and enjoy the views of the Thuringian Forest.l The hote is rated 4* superior and has a sauna and a lift.

Walk 1. Walk up to the Rennsteig at Hohe Sonne, follow the path back to Wilde Sau, then return via the Wartburg (about 10 miles).
