The Eifel

The Eifel as a whole is a gentle landscape of wooded hills and bare heathland, divided up by a series of quiet valleys and dotted with volcanic lakes.

Our holidays focus on the southern, Volcanic Eifel, which has spectacular pillars of volcanic rock and glassy, circular crater lakes, locally known as Maare. Holiday facilities here are well developed.

Many of the rocky summits are crowned with a romantic castle ruin; The pretty small town of Manderscheid has two! Your walks in the Eifel will lead you past dolomite cliffs, ancient trees and nature reserves, and over rolling hills and through peaceful woodland and via Stone Age, Celtic and Roman settlements as well as past traditional farmhouses.

The Volcanic Eifel Tour

A seven day walking tour through the Volcanic Eifel

This eight night walking tour starts in Gerolstein, known throughout Germany for its unique mineral waters, a product of the volcanic history of the area. The route continues to Manderscheid and passes several crater lakes and a number of castles as it heads north. As you return to Gerolstein you pass romantic river valleys and prehistoric sites. There are several high points along the way to climb as well. Valley of the River Kyll

The Volcanic Eifel - Gerolstein

A six night Single Centre Holiday

Gerolstein is in the central Volcanic Eifel and is the start and finish of the Volcanic Eifel Tour. A dense network of footpaths opens up a countryside of Romano-Celtic remains, caves, crater lakes and mineral springs, fine forests and hills.

Good public transport connections to the Roman city of Trier and the Mosel Valley allow you to explore a nearby, but very different, countryside.

Although the Walking Holidays on this page are of six or seven days, we can usually arrange for you to cover just part of a walking tour, or just spend two or three days in a single centre, so this area is ideal for a short break of three or four days walking (four or five nights accommodation).
