Double Bed, or Twin Bed?

The Germans (as well as the Austrians, the Swiss and the Scandinavians) by and large do not use double beds as we in the UK (or the French) know them, either in hotels or at home. What we call a double bed is known in German speaking countries as a "French Bed". Equally, German double beds do not have double duvets either (nor will you find these in the shops).

The usual German double bed consists of a double bed frame with separate mattresses and duvets (we have never seen blankets for bedding anywhere in Germany) as in the picture below.

In some popular walking areas in Germany and Austria, hotels do not have any genuine twin rooms with two, completely separate single beds at all, while in others there may be one or two available. These need to be requested specially.

For example, twin bedded rooms are not available on any of our holidays in the Black Forest, nor in Saxon Switzerland. On the King Ludwig Way, on the Rhine Heights Way and in the Harz, twin rooms are normally available, at least if you book well in advance, but it may be necessary to book you into a more expensive hotel at one or more points along the route, which will require an appropriate additional charge.

If you want to book a holiday with guaranteed twin rooms, please speak to us before booking. Our phone number is 01946 861652.
