Day 1. Arrive by train in Achern, transfer to Lauf.
Day 2. A circular walk, returning to Lauf. First walk to the Old Trotthaus
once the centre of winemaking here, with its 16th Century wine press. Now walk steadily uphill
to reach the well named Panorama Way. This follows the contour of the steep slope leading
up to the Black Forest, and offers magnificent views over Lauf and the surrounding area.
Return to Lauf along a river valley (about 7 miles).
Day 3. Leave Lauf following a gentle riverside path. Then you have a zig-zag climb up a hill
to a superb view. You then contour the hillside to Hohritt. The latter part of the walk is downhill,
sometimes fairly steeply to a grotto. Continue downhill to the vineyards and
along a path which is also an exercise and fitness course to Obersasbach. (about 8 miles).
Day 4. Start uphill to the monument to the French Marshal Turenne, killed here at the
beginning of the Battle of Sasbach on 27 July 1675. Then your route takes you past a lake, then
past a chapel dedicated to St. Anthony before finishing through woodland and vineyards
to end in Sasbachwalden, noted for its flowers, its wine and its haf-timbered houses and
voted the most beautiful small town in Germany in 2002 (about 9 miles).
Day 5. For an easy walk, follow the Ortenauer Wine Trail, which is only 4 miles.
The 'official' route leads higher up over the valley into Kappelrodeck (about 6 miles). Day 6. Your final day is spent on a circular walk through the hills behind Kappelrodeck.
The route follows part of a forest nature trail (about 5¼ miles).
The walk can be extended by branching off along the Geological Nature Trail, a circular walk past fascinating rock outcrops set in superb forest. | |
