Tour Details for The Ausonius Way 2010

Map of Ausonius Way Enjoy this eight day walk through the heart of the western Hunsrück; follow paths through remote forest and along old Roman roads, and reach the highest point in Germany west of the Rhine. This holiday includes a range of very different places to stay, including an inn at a trout farm and another on a vineyard. Daily ascent and descent ranges from 750ft to 1900ft.
This is one of the closest parts of Germany to the UK. You can also book just part of this walk for a three, four or five day short break. Please phone us on 01946 861652 to dicuss your options.

Day 1. Arrive in Wittlich; transfer to Morbach.

Day 2. Start by following one of the finest nature trails in Germany. Then climb to the summit of the Erbeskopf (2690ft). On a clear day you can see as far as the Vosges in France and the Taunus just north of Frankfurt. Descend to the Hunsrückhaus, where you can see displays of environmental and natural interest. Finally walk down to the village of Deuselbach (about 12 miles).

Hunolstein Castle

Day 3. A fairly long (though there is a short cut available), but gentle day, mainly through a range of remote forests. The last part takes you through the romantic Singende Tal (singing valley) to Geisfeld, where the parish church is one of the last works of the famous baroque architect Balthasar Neumann (about 16 miles).

Day 4. A short day to allow you to recover from the longer one yesterday. The first part of the walk takes you under a dramatic viaduct, then you walk up a valley through virgin forest with fine views over the Hunsrück. The walk ends in Bescheid, at a well known trout farm (about 8 miles).

Railway Viaduct

Day 5. Follow the valley of the River Dhron to a mill. Then you walk through more fine forest to the famous 'Five Lakes View', actually a view over the River Mosel which, because of the way the river bends, appears as five separate lakes. From here take the Mosel Heights Way to the Konstatinhöhe vineyards above Neumagen-Dhron (about 11 miles).
Neumagen-Dhron is considered to be the oldest wine growing community in Germany. It was a popular resort for the Roman nobility and the remains of a Roman ship have been found.

Day 6. Today you walk through valleys and over hills, but en route you pass two dramatic rock outcrops, the Harpelstein and the Wacken, which can be climbed and from which there are fine views. From the Wacken, you walk down the Golden Valley to Gräfendhron (about 14 miles).

Hunrueck Walkers

Day 7. Much of today's walk is along old Roman roads high above the River Mosel. You start by following a stream up into the forest, where you pick up the Roman road. The day ends at the village of Gonzerath on the Hunsrück heights (about 11 miles).

Day 8. A more relaxing day's walking, mainly through valleys. You pass watermills and then come to the striking ruins of Baldenau Castle, with its attractive moat. Finally you return to Morbach (about 11 miles).
