The Red Deer Trail 2010

Map of the Red Deer Trail This tour changed in 2005, and if you have not visited the Northern Black Forest for sometime, you will find that it repays a repeat visit. The landscape has opened up and the views have become more wide reaching.

The standard tour described below is 7 days / 8 nights, but if you are looking for a short break, a 3 day / 4 night walk along the first half of the route is also available. Daily distances are reasonably short, between 13 and 9 miles.

The hotels on this tour are definitely Superior Hotels: all 4* or equivalent, and all have their own swimming pool. The Forsthaus Auerhahn (at the end of Day 5) now only has non-smoking rooms.

The community of Baiersbronn (Schwarzenberg and Obertal both lie within Baiersbronn) is famed far and wide for the three restaurants that hold Michelin stars.

Day 1. Arrive in Freudenstadt.

Day 2. Leave Freudenstadt, heading north along the Mittelweg through fir forest. Part of this route is also a forest nature trail. Continue along the Mittelweg with its magnificent view over the valley of the River Murg to Seewald (about 13 miles).

Day 3. Continue past gentle meadowland with fine views. Then a stretch of ancient forest and down to the Kaltenbach Lake. Follow the valley down to Gompelscheuer and through meadows along the bank of the River Grosse Enz. Continue to Enzklösterle (about 11 miles).
Black Forest Moorland
Day 4. Leave via the Mittelweg and walk past the Hohlohsee wetlands nature reserve; take the Westweg over the Toter Mann (3002 feet) and across the Schramberg plateau. Finally to Schwarzenberg, where the hotel restaurant is the holder of a Michelin Star (about 11 miles).
The four night tour ends here.

Day 5. First through watermeadows to Schönmünzach, then along the valley of the Schönmünz river to Hinterlangenbach. then past a game reserve to Seibelseckle and finally along a short stretch of the Westweg to Hinterlangenbach (about 9 miles).

Day 6. Continue along the Westweg to the Mummelsee lake. Now walk south over the Steigerskopf and the Saukopf with a fine view over Wildsee lake. On to the Ruhestein, then down into Obertal (about 12 miles).

Day 7. Climb up to the Buhlbachsee lake, then over the top of the Black Forest ridge to Zuflucht. Follow the Westweg to Alexanderschanze and through forest to Kniebis (about 10 miles).
